Poker is a card game in which players bet money into a central pot based on the cards they hold. The rules of each variant of the game are different, but most involve a blind bet (usually called an ante) before players are dealt their cards.
The initial deal of cards is followed by one or more betting rounds. The first round begins when the dealer shuffles and deals cards to each player one at a time, starting with the player on the left.
After the initial deal, each player can choose to call (put into the pot the same amount as the previous player) or raise (put into the pot more than the previous player). At the end of a round, all bets are gathered together into the central pot.
Learn your opponent’s tells – This is a crucial part of poker. You should be able to read your opponent’s eye movements, idiosyncrasies, hand gestures, betting behavior and more.
Don’t be afraid to fold – Many people assume that folding a hand is losing, but this is not necessarily the case! It is often the best move. You are saving your chips for a better hand, and you can stay alive a little longer without getting hurt!
Position is key – This is especially true in late position. Having the ability to act last gives you more information about your opponents’ hands and allows you to make accurate value bets.
