Online Poker in the United States
While there is no federal law prohibiting players from playing online poker, the state of Nevada does restrict the game. In states like Nevada, a player can deposit up to $1,500 at a time. However, the amount deposited at an internet site depends on the jurisdiction. In California, for example, a player can deposit only $500, while in other states, a limit of $1,000 applies. The maximum amount of a deposit is usually determined by the poker site.
The age requirement for playing poker online depends on where you live. If you are from New Hampshire, for example, you must be at least 18 years old in order to participate. In other jurisdictions, however, the minimum age is often higher. In the United States, however, a person must be 18 years old or at least the legal gambling age to sign up with a poker site. If you are unsure, ask the site’s customer support team.
Fortunately, the situation in the US is looking up. Recently, the US Department of Justice overturned its 2011 opinion, and a lawsuit brought by the New Hampshire Lottery Commission has resulted in a positive ruling from the US District Court. The lawsuit is currently in the appeals process and could go all the way to the US Supreme Court. Until the final decision is made, online poker players in the United States are free to play real money games.
