What Is a Slot?

1. A slit or other narrow opening, esp. one for receiving something, as a coin or a letter. 2. A place, position, or job: He was given a slot as the newspaper’s chief copy editor.

3. In sports, an unmarked area in front of an opponent’s goal that affords a vantage point for an attacking player.

The slot> HTML element lets you create dynamic placeholders for content on your Web pages. A slot can either wait for content to be added (a passive slot) or call out for it (a busy slot). A slot can also have a name attribute, which specifies its role in the page’s overall layout.
